DAYS 5, 6, 7: Cat's Eye, Avant-Garde, Bridal Makeup Looks (PART I)

The previous three days were the most toxic in makeup school. Hence, the lack of posts. I would always go home extremely tired and I would just fall asleep without realizing it. But it was all worth it because it was during these days that I learned a lot more, tested my limits and discovered that I can really be patient as well. haha. =)

Makeup school is 1% fun but 99% hard work, at least for me. The fun part includes my love and passion for makeup, my new found friends and new colleagues in the makeup industry, and the little breaks during class wherein I realize how stupid (forgive the word) I am when it comes to makeup application, that I end up laughing at myself. haha. =)

So let's go to Day 5 first. Our topic for that day was how to make The Cat's Eye. I am fond of using eyeliner on myself, but even if I've been doing it for so many years, I still cannot make it perfect. How much more if I'm gonna do it on another person?

When it comes to eye makeup application, one must know the basics very well. And when I say very well, I mean it. What you do on a normal eye, you cannot do it on prominent eyes, droopy eyes, etc. And that day, my model's eyes were not the easiest to do a cat's eye on.

Here she is.

My model is 30 years old, and once again, I forgot her name (the perks of getting old, haha. =). She has a round face and hooded eyes --- which I met with too much challenge. Her problem areas are her oily skin especially on the t-zone area and some old and new pimples and pimple marks.

Hooded eyes, like hers look like the lids are partly closed. For this type, the eyes must appear prominent than the eyelids. Her eyelids are obviously "fleshy" so these must recede in order for the eyes to be "open".

MAKEUP TIP: For hooded eyes, the browbone must be highlighted, but not too much because it will make the eyes appear more hooded. The same shade must be used for highlighting along the upper lash line only. The midtone shade should start at the base of the upper lash line and cover the whole lid, then make sure to blend with the highlight shade. The contour shade should start at the base of the upper lash line and again, must be blended with the whole lid (midtone), to make the hooded area recede. Lastly, define the lower lash line using the same contour shade. Define the upper and lower lash lines and the eyebrows to make the eyes appear open.

Next, the cat's eye. Of course, to achieve this, one must use an eyeliner. Liquid or pencil eyeliners are not the best options when doing this because they tend to smudge and they don't make a very defined line. It is advisable to use either gel or cake eyeliners. For my model, I used a cake liner.

MAKEUP TIP: Starting at the upper inner corner of the eye, gently brush the liner along the lash line then stop right before the end of the upper outer corner of the eye (about two or three lashes or just a few millimeters away from the end). Don't put eyeliner on the entire upper lash line because it will make the eyes look droopy. From there, slightly make an upward angle. Make sure that it curves, not too straight or too slanted. You can go from fine cat's eye to heavy cat's eye. For fine cat's eye, just line the upper lash line, but for the heavy cat's eye, connect the upper lash line to the entire lower lash line. Fill in any gaps that you will then be making when you connect the two lash lines to make it appear continuous. For the heavy cat's eye, a smoky eye will work best while for the fine cat's eye, highlight and midtone shades are fine. You can skip the contour shade.

And so, here she is with her cat's eye and smoky eyes, using three shades.
